BAROQUE TREASURES - MUSICA SACRA
George Frideric Handel: Messiah
FROM THE MONASTERY KLOSTERNEUBURG (VIENNA)
George Frideric Handel always put Messiah on the programme during Lent or Easter, in accordance with the content, which deals with the Passion and Resurrection in the second part, and his Return and Glorification in the third part. The first London performance of the oratorio took place on 19 March 1743 in the Covent Garden Theatre. Even during Handel's lifetime it became customary in Dublin to perform the work in the concert hall during the Advent season. The Bach Consort Vienna, under the direction of Rubén Dubrovsky, gave a concert 273 years later - on the day of the London premiere to the day - of the Messiah of Christmas back to Easter, in keeping with George Frideric Handel's preference.
