Exodus – The Men Who Shaped Hollywood
Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Eric Zeisl · Concert film from the casemates of Palais Coburg, Vienna
Johannes Fleischmann, Magda Amara and Günter Haumer play Korngold and Zeisl – two Viennese composers who fled Nazism for America and only became friends in exile in Los Angeles.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s scores shaped the sound of Hollywood cinema. Eric Zeisl, also from Vienna, fled with his wife to Paris in 1938 and on to New York in 1939; in Hollywood he wrote film scenes for MGM and later taught at Los Angeles City College.
Violinist Johannes Fleischmann sets their music side by side: Korngold’s Violin Sonata, Op. 6, premiered in 1913 when the composer was 16, and Zeisl’s “Brandeis Sonata”, in which he reflects on his flight from Austria. Alongside them are Korngold’s piano waltz “Margit” and his song “Schneeglöckchen”, both quoted by the young composer in the sonata. Magda Amara is at the piano, with baritone Günter Haumer.
The film was made in January 2021 in the casemates of Palais Coburg in Vienna, for the release of Fleischmann’s album “Exodus” on Odradek Records.
