The Magic Flute – Mozart Week 2026
Rolando Villazón’s new staging of Mozart’s Singspiel, recorded at the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg.
For the 70th anniversary of the Mozart Week and Mozart’s 270th birthday, artistic director Rolando Villazón created a new production of “Die Zauberflöte” at the Haus für Mozart. Inspired by Stendhal’s biography of Mozart, the dying composer experiences the opera as a vision in his room. Sets and costumes draw on the colours of Mark Rothko; pieces of furniture transform the abstract space, while the plot of the Singspiel remains unchanged.
Roberto González-Monjas conducts the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg and the Philharmonia Chor Wien. The cast includes Kathryn Lewek as the Queen of the Night, Emily Pogorelc as Pamina, Magnus Dietrich as Tamino, Franz-Josef Selig as Sarastro and Theodore Platt as Papageno.
SCARLATTI Arts international recorded the production for television in January 2026, during rehearsals and a performance.
