Two settings of the Magnificat by father and son Bach, from the opening concert of the International Baroque Festival Melk Abbey.
The opening concert of the International Baroque Festival Melk Abbey 2025 placed two settings of the Song of Mary side by side: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D major, BWV 243, and the Magnificat, Wq 215, by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel.
Pablo Heras-Casado conducts Concentus Musicus Wien and the Collegium Vocale 1704 (director: Václav Luks). The soloists are Nuria Rial and Shira Patchornik (soprano), Sophie Harmsen (alto), Michael Schade (tenor) and Johannes Kammler (bass); Michael Schade is also the festival’s artistic director.
The concert was recorded on 6 June 2025 in the abbey church of Melk, in UHD, with stereo and Dolby Atmos sound.
