Selva morale e spirituale
Claudio Monteverdi · Vienna Easter Concert at St. Stephen’s Cathedral 2014
Monteverdi’s sacred music with the Bach Consort Wien under Rubén Dubrovsky – the ensemble’s first Easter concert at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, 16 April 2014.
In the decades in which Claudio Monteverdi composed for San Marco in Venice as maestro di cappella, he created a new, groundbreaking kind of church music. His inspired idea was to bring together southern rhythms from folk music with age-old psalms from the Old Testament. Monteverdi explores every form, from solo and duet to full tutti; the instruments often play colla parte, each vocal line accompanied by a partner instrument.
With a selection from the collection “Selva morale e spirituale” (1641), the Bach Consort Wien under Rubén Dubrovsky traces the Passion of Jesus Christ, right up to Easter. The concert on 16 April 2014 in a sold-out St. Stephen’s Cathedral was the first Easter concert of the Bach Consort Wien – the start of a series that brings great works of music history back to the place they were written for: the sacred space.
